Art & Design
Head of Art and Design - Mrs McMahon
Art is the means through which students can express their ideas, feelings and emotions and so as a department together we ensure that our pupils experience a challenging programme of work. We strive to provide a stimulating environment with a positive and encouraging atmosphere which enables all of our pupils to become confident in their individual creativity.
FACILITIES
We have 2 fully equipped Art rooms with digital cameras, a ceramic studio with a kiln, sewing machines and access to the school ICT suite.
AIMS
- To make Art and Design enjoyable, interesting and challenging
- To give pupils an experience of working with a full range of materials, media and processes in keeping with the Revised Curriculum
- To encourage pupils to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas through their work.
- To encourage pupils to work independently.
- To encourage pupils to broaden their knowledge of Art and develop links with galleries, museums and practising Artists.
The content of the courses have been deliberately devised in order to allow students to gain experience in the Fine Art and Design area.
KEY STAGE 3
All Year 8 – 10 pupils will experience a double period of Art & Design per week. The programme of work is planned over three years to progress and encourage pupils to research, gather and interpret information from a variety of sources. They will develop an appreciation of other Artists, Craft-workers and Designers from a wide range of cultures.
They will experience working in both two and three dimensions and in media such as Drawing, Painting, Print, Textiles, Ceramics, Sculpture and Digital Media.
All work undertaken will be discussed and evaluated using the department assessment criteria.
KEY STAGE 4 G.C.S.E
Year 11 & 12 pupils have four periods of Art and Design per week. Units are chosen from 5-10 given themes and the pupils determine individual outcomes based on study, research and experimentation.
Pupils who choose to study Art & Design at GCSE Level follow the NI CCEA Specification, (A two year course) and they follow an integrated, critical, practical and theoretical study of Art & Design.
AS/A2 Level
Year 13 & 14 pupils will have eight periods of Art and Design per week. Pupils at this level are working towards independent learning and will be expected to work in class, at home and in study time developing their research and practical artwork.
Pupils who choose to study Art and Design at AS/A2 Level build on their previous experiences to provide a solid foundation in the subject.

ART BULLETIN
Dromore High School was honoured to invite such a renowned Irish Ceramist into school, to complete a two day sculpting workshop with Year 12 and 13 pupils. The pupils used their individual coursework ideas to plan and prep for the arrival of Mr. Declan Honan. This hands-on workshop proved to be a very beneficial experience for all pupils involved.
