Aim of the Department
The aim of the English department is to equip each individual for life in the 21st century by promoting creativity and developing skills such as language development, reading, writing and talking and listening. It is our aim that pupils will develop a deep appreciation of a wide range of texts and literature which encourages skills for life long learning.

Key Stage 3
Pupils will participate in a wide range of tasks and activities to develop their skills in the three key areas of Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing. This will be externally assessed at the end of Year 10 through completion of the CCEA Key Stage Three exam.
Year 8 Pupils will:
- read and write a range of poetry including Kennings and Cinquains.
- read and respond to prose fiction e.g. Stormbreaker, Goodnight Mister Tom
- read and respond to drama e.g. Oliver Twist, Bugsy Malone
- discuss and analyse non-fiction and media texts
- study a Shakespeare play – Macbeth
- participate in a range of talking and listening activities
Year 9 Pupils will:
- read and write a range of poetry including narrative poems
- read and respond to prose fiction e.g. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Skeleton Key
- read and respond to drama e.g. Treasure Island, Burning Everest
- discuss and analyse non-fiction and media texts
- examine use of language for effect
- study a Shakespeare play – Romeo and Juliet
- participate in a range of talking and listening activities
Year 10 Pupils will:
- read and write a range of poetry focusing on local and modern examples
- study Shakespeare – The Taming of the Shrew
- discuss and analyse non-fiction and media texts
- examine use of language for effect
- study drama extracts
- Key Stage 3 preparation
- participate in a range of talking and listening activities
GCSE
Specification: OCR English Language
The course is a combination of three units which are assessed through internal and external assessment.
